About Mo Yoga Less Problems
Welcome to Mo Yoga Less Problems – a podcast that helps connect you with yoga teachers.
Hi, I’m Jas. I love learning about yoga. Actually, I love learning, period, but that’s another story. To give you an idea, I started teaching myself anatomy almost a year before I started yoga teacher training and during training, I was a complete nerd about learning alignment, anatomy, the names of poses, etc. I even taught myself how to read Sanskrit to improve my pronunciation (admittedly, already being able to read Punjabi helps!).
I also love learning about people; about their journey to where they are now, how they view the world, what’s important to them, and how they want to grow. There’s a lot of experts to learn from in the yoga world, and often the podcasts / magazines / blogs that feature them focus on teachers that are very well known. However, as I get to know more of the local yoga community, I’m discovering that there’s a lot of expertise and passion all around me.
I want to be more connected to the yoga community around me, so I married together two things I love, yoga and people, and came up with this podcast. Through each episode, you’ll learn about a yoga teacher that is new to you (or learn more about a teacher you already know). You’ll learn about their journey and what’s important to them. Maybe you’ll be inspired to check out a class with them or visit a studio you haven’t been to before. My hope is that you hear stories that interest you and resonate with you to help connect you to the community around you!
Is this podcast only about teachers in Portland?
Nope! I’m starting in Portland because that’s where I am, and it’s the easiest place to start. If you have a teacher you love, either in Portland or in another city, that you would like to see featured on the podcast, let me know! Send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Where did the name come from?
I was having a really hard time coming up with a social media handle that I liked and that wasn’t taken. I enlisted my friends to help and as I was brainstorming out loud and rattling off possible names, I started incorporating random things that I love. And I LOVE 90s Hip Hop and R&B. I think I can remember how it went almost verbatim:
Me: “Mo yoga, mo problems? [see Mo Money Mo Problems, 90s Hip Hop hit] …. no, that wouldn’t make sense. Mo yoga, less problems?”
Laughing, my friends said, “That’s perfect; it’s so you!”
As I reflected on it, I confirmed that, in my experience, practicing more yoga did create more ease and compassion (e.g., less problems), both physically and spiritually. Thus, Mo Yoga Less Problems was born. I almost laugh every time I say it, so it did turn out to be perfect.
A little about me
I’m a former attorney from the East coast who moved out to Portland, OR in 2014 to work for a tech start up. I experienced a big change in lifestyle and wellness in my transition from one career, and coast, to another. It was basically a 180 degree shift, so it took a while to adjust but, eventually, I settled in and pursued my longtime goal of becoming a yoga teacher. I completed my 200 hr teacher training in 2017 and have been teaching since.
My practice started, over ten years ago when I still lived in New Jersey. I was trying to find a solution for the daily back pain I was having while in law school as a result of long hours of sitting and poor posture. I started by doing a 10 minute video every morning from a video podcast called YOGAmazing and was indeed amazed at how much it helped. After that, I started tried out different studios and teachers in NJ and Portland and am still doing that today!
